We sat down with Ricardo/Hammy to learn about his background, his journey on HYTOPIA, and the creation of KARTLAND. Ricardo is a designer from the Netherlands with a background in illustration, animation, 3D modeling, and interface design. After years away, he returned to game creation, fueled by passion for the HYTOPIA platform.
Ricardo’s journey is a powerful testament to the accessibility of the HYTOPIA SDK.
“I’m not a developer, I’m actually a designer,” Ricardo shares. “I always liked to create and draw stuff, but I was always dependent on developers to build my ideas.”
That changed when he discovered AI tools like Cursor combined with HYTOPIA’s SDK. Starting with simple examples and leveraging community support, Ricardo transformed from someone who didn’t know what an IDE was to creating one of the most anticipated games on our platform.
Working just 10 hours a week as a passion project alongside his day job, Ricardo proves that HYTOPIA democratizes game development. His journey from explorer in 2021 to game creator in 2024 showcases the platform’s evolution and potential.
Built on HYTOPIA’s Vision
KARTLAND exemplifies what HYTOPIA stands for; empowering creators regardless of their technical background. Ricardo rates the experience a 7/10 for non-developers, crediting the SDK’s MCP server, helpful documentation, and especially the supportive community for making his dream possible.
“The community has been great. I’ve gotten answers to all my questions, guidance, and even DMs from other developers helping me,” Ricardo notes, highlighting the collaborative spirit that makes HYTOPIA special.
The Pre-Release launch marks just the beginning of KARTLAND’s journey. Ricardo’s commitment to delivering a polished first experience means players can expect quality gameplay even in this early stage, with continuous improvements based on community feedback.
Be Part of the Racing Revolution
KARTLAND represents more than just another game on HYTOPIA, it’s proof that great ideas can come from anywhere, and that our platform enables anyone to bring their gaming visions to life.

HYTOPIA is built with creators in mind, and our monetization system reflects that commitment. Whether you’re designing the next viral cosmetic or crafting an engaging game economy, we’ve created tools to help you succeed.
Here’s everything you need to know about earning on HYTOPIA.
How Do You Make Money?
Creators on HYTOPIA earn through two main channels:
Marketplace Sales: Sell cosmetics, items, lootboxes, and bundles on the HYTOPIA Marketplace
In-Game Microtransactions: Offer seamless purchases directly within your game experience
When a player makes a purchase, it syncs instantly to their Locker and becomes available across all compatible experiences. You maintain full control over what you sell and how it integrates with your game’s economy through the Creator Dashboard.
Launch Timeline: Monetization is expected to go live in November 2025. The marketplace is currently in alpha testing..
Creator Revenue Splits
Here’s where HYTOPIA truly stands apart. We believe in putting creators first, and our revenue splits prove it:
Yes, you read that right, 85% of every first sale goes directly to you, with no platform fees eating into your earnings. These splits are designed to help creators thrive as HYTOPIA grows.
Note: Splits are enforced immediately at checkout onchain and reflected in your dashboard’s sales analytics.
What Can You Sell?
1. Global Cosmetics
Visual items like helmets, capes, backpacks, and gloves that are purely cosmetic by default (no gameplay advantage). You can specifically code them into your game mechanics if desired. Global cosmetics work across all HYTOPIA experiences unless a developer explicitly hides them.
Important: Cosmetics must adhere to HYTOPIA’s blocky visual style and pass marketplace review. Check out our Styling & Assets guide for details.
2. Non-Cosmetic Items
Items that affect gameplay (power-ups, boosts, keys, consumables) without changing a player’s appearance.
Pro tip: Non-cosmetic items are tradable, which means you can earn royalties when players resell them.
3. Lootboxes
Lootboxes provide a single random reward from your defined item pool. You set the items and rarities, and HYTOPIA’s system automatically calculates drop rates. Rarities range from Normal (100%-25%) to Utopian (0.5%-0%).
Curated sets of predetermined items with no randomness involved. Players know exactly what they’re getting (e.g., Desert Ranger Set). Once purchased, items unpack directly into the player’s Locker.
Perfect for quick, contextual purchases like extra lives, in-game currency, or revives. Players see a popup, select their payment method, and complete the transaction without leaving your game. You can configure these through your dashboard before implementation.
Blockchain that Actually Works
HYTOPIA uses blockchain technology for what it truly excels at; true player ownership and freedom.
Here’s how it works:
Marketplace items exist as NFTs on the Base blockchain
Each player has a unique wallet tied to their account
Players can sell their items anytime, converting NFTs to USDC or $HYBUX
Funds can be withdrawn outside of HYTOPIA, no walled garden
Unlike other platforms, HYTOPIA doesn’t trap your money. They enjoy genuine ownership and freedom. That’s how blockchain should work.
Want to maximize your earnings? Here are proven strategies that work:
1. Lead with Cosmetics
Vanity sells. Build themed sets, seasonal drops, and mix-and-match slots so small purchases add up to complete looks.
2. Create Starter Value
Offer a low-price starter bundle ($1-$3) that kicks off a habit loop. Clear upgrade paths (Starter → Deluxe → Master) keep players engaged.
3. Time-Limited Events
Create urgency with event-driven drops tied to updates, new modes, or special rotations. First-time user quests that reward lootboxes work great too.
4. Progression-Friendly Non-Cosmetics
If you sell gameplay items, favor time-savers (XP boosts, convenience keys) over raw power. Cap stacking and time-limit boosts to maintain balance.
5. Clean Shop UX
Design a mobile-first layout. Avoid overwhelming carousels. Make it easy for players to find and buy what they want.
6. Ethics = Retention
Monetization should never block core fun. Avoid pay-to-win mechanics where possible and stay away from predatory gambling-style mechanics. Happy players stick around and spend more over time.

HYTOPIA is building a creator-first platform where your work is valued and rewarded fairly. With industry-leading revenue splits, real player ownership, and powerful monetization tools, you have everything you need to turn your creative vision into a sustainable income.
The future of game creation is here. Let’s build it together.
TL;DR: Since launching our SDK in February 2025, we’ve grown to 143k+ users with 1.93M minutes of playtime. September alone saw 150% growth in users and engagement, with the platform now averaging 5,000 game sessions daily.
When we launched our SDK Alpha in February 2025, we weren’t sure what to expect. Seven months later, the numbers tell a story we’re incredibly proud to share with you.
What is HYTOPIA?
For those new here, HYTOPIA is a browser-based gaming platform where creators build instant-play blocky games using TypeScript and JavaScript. We’re building what we believe gaming should be: no downloads, no barriers, just click and play. Built with Three.js, our platform lets developers create multiplayer games that run in browsers, on desktop, mobile, and as app.
What sets us apart?
Creator-First Economics We give creators a higher percentage of marketplace fees than Roblox—because we believe in rewarding the people who make great games, not extracting maximum value from them. Even better, creators earn 5% automatic royalties on every player-to-player resale of their items. Your creations keep paying you long after the initial sale. All assets live onchain via Coinbase’s Base network, giving creators true ownership with the option to sell and withdraw funds.
Built for Developer Productivity Everything happens in one place: hytopia.com/create is your complete dashboard for uploading games, configuring marketplace items, viewing stats, and managing your creations. Need to build a map? Our browser-based World Editor at build.hytopia.com lets you create by placing blocks and models, no complex 3D software required.
The development experience is ridiculously fast. Run your server locally with one command, test instantly in your browser via localhost, and watch changes reflect immediately; no recompilation needed. When you’re ready to ship, we automatically deploy your game to geo-distributed servers across the globe, ensuring players connect to the nearest region with minimal latency.
Technical Advantages That Actually Matter Our server-authoritative engine means game logic runs on secure servers, not client-side. You write the game once, and it automatically works cross-platform – web, desktop, mobile, all without changing game logic. Only UI and control tweaks are needed.
Speaking of UI: you design interfaces using familiar HTML and CSS instead of wrestling with complicated game engine UI systems. Building a 2D layer over a 3D game is usually painful, we made it simple.
The blocky aesthetic isn’t a limitation; it’s a feature. Players instantly understand the visual language, and creative constraints often lead to more innovative solutions and a more coherent platform.
Zero Friction for Players Players click a link and they’re in-game within seconds. No client download, no registration wall, no hunting through menus. Just instant play, anywhere, on any device. That’s the accessibility we’re prividing.
The Growth Story
Let’s talk numbers. Our metrics from February to September show something special happening:
143K+ total users across 177 countries worldwide
1.93M minutes of playtime (that’s almost 4 years worth of gameplay)
245K+ platform visits
Averaging 5,000 game sessions per day in September
Source: Mixpanel
Games That Are Winning
Our games page shows the variety creators are building. Here are some standouts:
SkyGarden [Open Beta] has 38K+ plays since launching in August. It’s an open-world farming sim meets MMORPG built by SkyGarden Studios, showing what’s possible when talented developers get access to our tools.
Steal My Brainrot captured 30K+ plays with its viral concept. Sometimes the best games are the ones that just make you laugh.
Cookie Clicker brought the classic idle game format to our platform with 16K+ plays, proving that great gameplay transcends graphical style.
Frontiers, our flagship MMORPG built by co-founder ArkDev, features quest systems, NPC pathfinding, persistent progress, and multiple interconnected regions. It’s a demonstration of what a single developer can accomplish with our SDK.
Beyond individual games, our HYTOPIA Game List page drew 340K+views and our homepage attracted 157K+ views, showing strong discovery behavior from players exploring what’s available. (source Google anlaytics)
Real Developers, Real Games
Our Creator Fund doubled from $125,000 to $250,000 in September due to demand exceeding expectations. We’re offering up to $25,000 per studio along with engineering support, marketing assistance, and a preferred revenue split.
In August, we welcomed IROC Studios to our Creator Fund; creators of Game Store Tycoon with 110+ million Roblox plays. They’re building Pawtopia on HYTOPIA.
Then in September, Retro Shrimp joined our Creator Fund to develop Hyper Ball Arena exclusively on HYTOPIA. These are Roblox veterans with over 1 billion combined plays across their games. When developers of that caliber choose your platform, it means something.
In addition to our announced studios, we have multiple to-be-announced studios still in the design, testing, and development stages of their games.
But it’s not just established studios. Over 50% of the first games on our platform were made by people who’d never coded before. That’s the democratization of game development we’re fighting for.
What’s Next?
Seven months ago, we launched with a SDK and a vision. Today, we’re approaching 150K+ users, nearly 2 million minutes of playtime, and a growing library of games spanning every genre imaginable, from tactical FPS (VoxFire) to kart racing (KARTLAND) to MMORPGs (Frontiers).
But the numbers only tell part of the story. The real story is the developer who published their first game ever on our platform. The Roblox veteran who chose HYTOPIA for their next title. The player who discovered a game through a simple link share and played for hours without downloading anything.
We’re building the future of voxel gaming, and you’re all part of it. Thank you for being on this journey with us.
The momentum continues. Retro Shrimp, a powerhouse Roblox development team with over 1 billion total plays across their portfolio has joined the HYTOPIA Creator Fund.
Retro Shrimp is behind some of Roblox’s most successful multiplayer experiences, bringing their combined expertise to HYTOPIA with Hyper Ball Arena, a high-speed, reaction-based multiplayer game where players deflect a blazing energy ball to be the last one standing.
A Team with Track Record
Joseph Drennan, a 17-year Roblox veteran who has launched 15+ projects, knows how to build experiences that capture and retain massive audiences. His leadership helped create titles like Skate Park (388 million plays, 66k peak concurrent users) and DOG (253 million plays, 25k peak CCU), numbers most developers only dream of achieving.
Daniel Pinheiro, the team’s lead programmer, brings equally impressive credentials. Since joining in 2020, he’s been instrumental in major successes including Ronald, which garnered over 200 million plays. With 11 years of Roblox Lua experience and 5 years specializing in TypeScript, Pinheiro embodies the technical expertise that thrives on HYTOPIA’s modern development stack.
Their success extends beyond pure metrics. Drennan’s work earned features on the official Roblox blog and spawned official merchandise, while Roblox Point was prominently featured on Roblox’s login page from 2015-2020; rare recognition that validates their creative vision.
Their upcoming title, Hyper Ball Arena, demonstrates the strategic thinking veteran developers bring to new platforms. The concept, a high-speed, reaction-based multiplayer game where players deflect an energy ball while adapting to dynamic arena hazards, builds on proven market dynamics while pushing creative boundaries.
The game features escalating intensity as each deflection increases the ball’s speed, dynamic arenas with dropping floors and moving platforms, and multiple game modes spanning free-for-all and team battles. It’s immediately accessible yet endlessly engaging, the hallmark of successful multiplayer gaming.
Why Proven Developers Choose HYTOPIA?
Established developers with proven track records are increasingly drawn to HYTOPIA’s unique positioning in the gaming ecosystem. While traditional platforms become increasingly saturated, HYTOPIA offers proven creators the opportunity to be early pioneers in a rapidly evolving space.
For developers who understand both the technical complexities and market dynamics of successful multiplayer games, HYTOPIA’s modern web-native architecture presents compelling advantages: instant cross-platform accessibility, no download barriers, and development tools that leverage familiar technologies like TypeScript.
Building the Future Together
Through the Creator Fund, the Retro Shrimp team will receive comprehensive support, including milestone-based funding, dedicated engineering assistance, and full go-to-market resources. Most importantly, they retain complete IP ownership while benefiting from HYTOPIA’s creator-favorable revenue split.
This partnership represents a broader transformation where proven developers are choosing to build the flagship experiences that will define HYTOPIA’s ecosystem. Each team brings not only their games but their communities, expertise, and validation of what’s possible when creativity meets cutting-edge technology.
The Growing Movement
As more established developers recognize HYTOPIA’s potential, we’re witnessing the early stages of a significant platform evolution.
The HYTOPIA Creator Fund applications remain open for teams ready to join this pioneering cohort. For developers with proven track records and bold visions, the opportunity to help define gaming’s next chapter has never been clearer.
